For post-production sound geeks in Games, TV, Film, and Broadcast Location sound AKA Production Sound Live sound world All your weird stories. I work at a very small local television station and we recently upgraded to Chyron Lyric from basically no graphics system. We had a contractor come in and set up templates and get us up and running but he never got the temperature to update on our time and temp bug, so basically our bug is currently just a big station logo. Naturally some people have complained about this so I've been trying to get it to work myself but I have basically zero experience with Chyron. So far I've gotten a data object set up that pulls the temperature from a data feed from the NWS and I can manually get the info to update by going into the edit menu and selecting to update the data object fields but if the data updates while the bug is playing out to our video switcher the temperature doesn't update.
I feel like I've set it up to refresh the data, update, and display every:30 which is overkill since the data updates only once an hour using the data commands. I'm not sure if this is a good place to ask for this kind of help, but any help is greatly appreciated. First, what version of Lyric are you using? If you're low-budget, you could be on some very old software.
It doesn't really matter, but live-updating is something Lyric has always lagged behind Viz & XPression on, but there's a few ways to do this for no money. Lyric used to come with a plugin called 'Data Harvester,' I never used it but it was designed precisely for situations like yours. You could open a web page, highlight the data you wanted to pull, and live link it. I never liked the idea because what happens if the internal HTML layout changes, etc. It filled the 'Fast, Cheap' portion of the Pick Two (the third being 'Good'), so maybe it can work for you.
If you can get Data Harvester working, you might want to consider asking your web folks to create a HTML page that ONLY displays current time & temp, refreshing every 60 seconds. If you can eliminate all the CSS/HTML markup that goes along with live web pages and just distill it down to the raw strings, I bet Data Harvester would become very reliable. It sounds like that might be a realistic resource to leverage.
Does NWS offer an API of any sort? You could program an Arduino that can go grab the web data and format it to HTML/XML or whatever. I would definitely NOT rely on the computer's internal clock for any of this.
Like others have suggested, you can definitely hire a consultant but I'm not sure how friendly my rates are for low-budget local TV. But, from 14 years of experience in live graphics, I can tell you that control-playing a message in Lyric and having the data update live without control-playing it again has ALWAYS been difficult. I don't remember the specifics of DBLink or what it's like now, but you definitely have low-cost options here. Thank you for the options and the response. The fact that it's something that's just not possible is something that I was starting to consider. We hired one 'consultant' like I said he set up everything up but couldn't get it working even as far as I have while he was here.
But yeah there's a reason that I, only one year out of college at my first job, am attempting to figure this out versus us trying to get another consultant in here I doubt we'd have the budget for it. It's Lyric 8.8 though.
It's already downloading an XML file from the NWS source in the post at least that's what the file is I find in the folder. Again the problem I'm having isn't necessarily getting the data into Lyric but rather getting it to update when the new data comes in, but who knows that may be because I'm using the wrong type of source. I haven't worked with Lyric in many years (6.5 was my main version.) One place I worked didn't even bother to get live clocks from NFL GSIS working with Lyric, another had some very very buggy software that kind of did it. They switched to VizRT and had live running clocks right out of the box. So, I'm speaking from older experience, but time/temp bugs and the like were always handled by an external Codi or Leitch box. If you're decent at programming, the LEIF API for Lyric is in C and has been around forever. If you can handle that, learn the API and you can definitely update live objects on a framebuffer through a custom Plugin.

Something the operator just has to do 'set it and forget it' with. If you can hack it, custom-coded solutions are awesome.
I write and maintain several for Ross XPression, but they're in C#, which is much nicer than C. Maybe Lyric has a.NET API now. Don't get buyer's remorse over Lyric/Chyron, it's the Range Rover of live graphics. Super fast and reliable. I wouldn't be the one with the remorse I didn't buy it, and it's a lot better than our old method of sending.psd,.png,. Jpg files straight to our switcher.
The only thing I'm getting frustrated by is that it seems the only place to go for any sort of tutorials or help seems to be Chyron's own YouTube page and if that doesn't help you there aren't any other 'how to' sort of resources out there that I have been able to find. I have a little bit of experience with programming mainly in Java though so I may look into what you recommended. Thanks for taking the time to try and help. My Chryon info is about 10+ years out of date, but a time insert used to come out-of-the-box as a feature with Max and Infinit, I'd be shocked if it didn't still come with Lyric. On an Infinit/Max you you could add a text field with the system time as a default, matching whatever color/font info you assigned to the text box. You could add that as a layer to your master template or via macro to any manual keys.
It was very simple, it just displayed whatever the system time was on the Chyron itself - so you set the time correctly in Chyron config and it would display that time. (We used it during the Iraq war to display 'Baghdad Time' on a locator lower 3rd by changing the system time in the Chyron to Baghdad time.) This was on an Infinit/Max but I'd hope that simple time display is still included as a menu option somewhere.
Glad to hear the clock is still easy! I did go through Lyric Pro training years ago, and I vaguely recall that you could put a portion of a web page or an RSS feed into a text box layer on a template? If I remember right the graphic would refresh every time you called up the page, but I can't remember if I'm thinking of Max/Infinit, Lyric, or Deko 3000/Deko 2.I was certified on all of them but I've been out of the industry for 6 years and the 3 before that I was in Master Control, so I haven't touched any kind of graphics machine in about 10 years. I know that isn't much help, but I do have this nagging memory that it can be done right out of the box without buying any extra plugins, but I could also be thinking of a Deko.
